SFA 6 EXPLORATORY FISHING

July 25, 2025

The Shrimp Committee Chairs, along with area shrimp committees, have decided to undertake exploratory fishing in SFA 6. The purpose of this work is to explore non-traditional fishing grounds, or grounds that have been fished in the past, but not for many years.

How to apply:

The deadline is end of day Monday, July 28. If a draw is needed, it will be conducted on Tuesday morning. Send your name, phone number, email address, and vessel name and CFV to Julian at 709-732-2515 or jryan@ffaw.ca.

Compensation:

  • 1. 60,000 lb of shrimp this season, to be used only during the exploratory trip and can only be caught in the designated exploratory area.
  • 2. 60,000 lb of shrimp will be added to your cap or IQ at the beginning of next season.
  • 3. Up to $20,000 will be paid to the license holder to offset costs such as fuel and crew costs. The more of the 60,000 lb allocation that is landed, the less cash that will be paid. For example, if you land 30,000 lb, then you will receive $10,000.

Terms and Conditions:

  • 1. We are looking for six vessels to do this work. If necessary, a draw will be conducted to select the six vessels.
  • 2. Eligibility requirements: SFA 6 license holder; a vessel capable of doing the work (no buddy-up or lease arrangements); FFAW member in good standing. It is not necessary to have cap or IQ remaining, as you will be given a 60,000 lb allocation to cover any incidental catch.
  • 3. The timeframe to complete this work is August 1 to August 15.
  • 4. Successful applicants agree to provide their logbook data/complete data sheets and submit this information to the FFAW and Shrimp Committee Chairs.
  • 5. Successful applicants agree to meet with the Shrimp Committee Chairs prior to the exploratory trip to identify the areas to be fished during this exploratory work.
  • 6. VMS data must be provided upon request.
  • 7. Exploratory trips are five-day fishing; minimum two-hour tows; no nighttime tows.

Failure to comply with the terms and conditions above may result in the withholding of next season’s 60,000 lb allocation.
