SAVED BY CUSMA: NL SPARED TRUMP TARIFFS ON SEAFOOD

April 3, 2025

Last night, on April 2, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that Canada will be spared from new tariffs, including the threatened 25% duties on seafood imports. Thanks to the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), which secures tariff-free trade for qualifying Canadian goods, our industry is shielded from such retaliatory measures. This decision delivers relief and stability—at least for now. FFAW-Unifor will keep a sharp eye on trade developments and remain steadfast in protecting our members’ livelihoods. The Union is hopeful this reprieve will reduce friction in price negotiations, empowering us to secure fair, market-based prices for all species without the looming threat of tariffs.
