Results of mail-in ballot for Lobster Fishing Area 5

The ballots on opening date and buddy-up for Lobster Fishing Area (LFA) 5 were counted at the FFAW office on April 7, 2025.

Present for the counting of the ballots were Inshore Council member Steve Ryan, as well as FFAW Administrative Staff Susan Finlay and Aaryn Lambert, and 3L Member Representative Ian Ivany. Online were LFA 5 Committee Members Jamie Aylward, Scott Phillips and Gerard Hounsell.

Results:

Total ballots: 127, including 1 spoiled ballot

Question 1: Season Opening/Closing Date

Earlier Season (May 1-July 6): 63 votes

Leave the season as is (May 8-July 13): 63 votes

Question 2: Do you support a buddy-up system?

Yes: 75 votes

No: 51 votes

Because of the tie in question 1, the LFA 5 committee decided to stay with a May 8th status quo opening date.

Dr. Erin Carruthers

Dr. Erin Carruthers is the Science Director and Senior Fisheries Scientist with the Fish, Food and Allied Workers Union (FFAW-Unifor), which is the labour union that represents the owner-operator fleet in Newfoundland and Labrador. The FFAW is committed to research and management that supports healthy oceans, fisheries, and coastal communities. Dr. Carruthers received her Ph. D. in Biology from Memorial University in 2011 followed by a postdoctoral fellowship with the Centre for Fisheries Ecosystems Research. Before coming to Newfoundland, Erin worked as a Research Biologist with Fisheries and Oceans Canada at the St. Andrews Biological Station. Her current research program is co-constructed with fish harvesters and includes research on coastal fishing communities, collaborative longline and trap surveys, and best practices for the avoidance, handling and release of unwanted catch.
