| FFAW-Unifor continues to monitor the ongoing removal of the MSC Baltic III from Cedar Cove, near Lark Harbour, and remains in regular communication with Resolve Marine and project partners as work progresses. Current efforts are focused on removing the remaining hazardous water from flooded compartments within the vessel. As a precautionary measure, all water being pumped from the wreck is being processed through a filtration system before being discharged. This additional step is intended to help protect the surrounding marine environment as preparations continue for the next phase of the removal operation. The project team now anticipates beginning the main vessel pull in late July or early August. Due to the condition of the wreck, the vessel is expected to be removed in sections rather than as a single piece. Project representatives have advised that while the vessel has sustained additional deterioration from continued exposure to the marine environment, all sections of the wreck will be recovered and removed from the site. On Thursday, July 16, FFAW-Unifor Staff Representatives Jeff Griffin and Julian Ryan attended a site visit to observe the operation firsthand and receive an update from project representatives. The visit provided an opportunity to review the progress of the removal effort, discuss upcoming work, and reinforce the importance of ongoing communication with harvesters and the local community throughout the project. FFAW-Unifor remains committed to closely monitoring the removal effort and advocating for the protection of harvesters’ interests and the marine environment. Members will continue to receive updates as significant milestones are reached and the project advances. Click here to view photo #1 from the site visit.
