ICE & WATER DEDUCTION ON COD – a violation of the collective agreement

July 15, 2026

Over the last couple of days harvesters have reported a 1% ice and water deduction from their cod landings. Companies are saying that it is permitted under the collective agreement. We want to be abundantly clear: a deduction for ice and water on a cod landing is not in accordance with the agreement reached in May with ASP.

The agreement states:

  • Ice and water deduction

For 2026 only, a 1% deduction, pending agreement from DFO. Any deduction in future years would be based on a study conducted by both sides of industry.

DFO did not agree to the deduction this year, as time did not allow the necessary work to be completed but agreed to work with the Parties for the coming year.

DFO agreement matters because any deduction has quota monitoring implications. Ice and water is not fish, so if that amount is being deducted, it cannot come off of the quota.

Grievances are in the process of being filed. If you are being deducted, please reach out to your staff rep.
