UNION DEMANDS OUTSIDE BUYERS FOR LIVE LOBSTER

April 30, 2023

Further to the update last week and last night, the Union is in the process of submitting a formal request for outside buyers of live lobster, as well as the option for harvesters to truck out their own live product.

Processing companies in Newfoundland and Labrador continue to hold the industry hostage, refusing to pay a fair share based on a market calculation that has worked for years.

Lobster is a live product that is very low risk in terms of food safety and ease of transport.

FFAW-Unifor is requesting that the provincial government facilitate outside buyers at the formula price, and that any outside buyer be required to sign a legal agreement ensuring they will pay the formula price.

The request will be received by Minister Bragg and Premier Andrew Furey first thing Monday morning.
