World Oceans Day events are taking place this weekend leading up to the official World Oceans Day on June 8th. Find an event near you to participate in keeping our oceans healthy:
World Oceans Day School Event
Location: Benoit’s Cove, NL
Date: June 5, 2018
Description: Fisheries and Oceans Canada is partnering with St. Peter’s Academy, World Wildlife Fund Canada, ACAP and the Qalipu First Nations for a ½ day event including (but not limited to) Indigenous prayer/drumming/ water ceremony, Right Whale presentation, ocean art activity using reusable cotton bags, mirco plastic activities, trivia oceans games, fishy hand prints (K-2 grade), and an ocean talk/pollution presentation.
World Ocean Day Activities
Location: Bonavista, NL

Description: Fisheries and Oceans Canada and Matthew Elementary are having a beach clean-up followed by school presentations on species at risk, a demonstration of urban pollution and their effects on wetlands, estuaries and the ocean, a touch tank experience and viewing of a fisheries patrol boat.
World Oceans Day Public Event
Location: Burgeo, NL
Date: June 6, 2018
Description: Fisheries and Oceans Canada will be partnering with the town of Burgeo, World Wildlife Fund Canada, ACAP and the Qalipu First Nations for a full day event including (but not limited to) Indigenous prayer/drumming/ water ceremony, beach clean-up, Right Whale presentation, ocean art activity using reusable cotton bags, mirco plastic activities, trivia oceans games, fishy hand prints (K-2 grade), and an ocean talk/pollution presentation.

Location: Corner Brook, NL
Date: June 4, 2018
Description: Fisheries and Oceans Canada is partnering with the city of Corner Brook, World Wildlife Fund Canada, ACAP and the Qalipu First Nations for a public event that will include Indigenous drumming and prayer in respect to the ocean, recycling initiatives, touch tank experiences, a micro plastic display, art contest, BBQ and local entertainment.

Description: Fisheries and Oceans Canada is partnering with JJ Curling Elementary, World Wildlife Fund Canada, ACAP and the Qalipu First Nations for a ½ day event including (but not limited to) Indigenous prayer/drumming/ water ceremony, Right Whale presentation, ocean art activity using reusable cotton bags, micro plastic activities, trivia oceans games, fishy hand prints (K-2 grade), and an ocean talk/pollution presentation.
Beach Clean‐up and World Oceans Day Celebration
Location: Fogo Island, NL

Description: Fisheries and Oceans Canada, the Town of Fogo Island, the Fogo Island Harbour Authority and the Shorefast Foundation have partnered for a community beach clean‐up and celebration at the Fisherman’s Union Trading Company premises with local music, face painting, touch tank, guest speakers, games and a BBQ.

Description: Fisheries and Oceans Canada has been invited to join Oceans Science Centre and the Oceans Learning Partnership to deliver a beach clean-up and hands on activities to highlight aquatic invasive species and marine debris.
World Oceans Day Art Contest for Grades K-6
Location: Newfoundland and Labrador – Province-wide
Date: April 30, 2018
Description: This is a joint effort of the Newfoundland and Labrador World Oceans Day Planning Committee (Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Parks Canada Agency, Fisheries Land and Resources, the Fisheries Food and Allied Workers Union, Canadians Parks and Wilderness Society, World Wildlife Fund Canada and the Marine Institute). One winner per grade level and classes that participate will be entered to win a school prize. Submissions will be displayed at the World Oceans Day Event held in St. John’s on June 2nd.
World Oceans Day Family Event
Location: St. John’s, NL
Date: June 2, 2018
Description: Fisheries and Oceans Canada is partnering with the provincial Dept. of Fisheries Land and Resources, Parks Canada Agency, the Fisheries Food and Allied Workers Union, World Wildlife Fund-Canada, Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society and the Marine Institute for a World Oceans Day Family Event. The event showcases attractions for all ages including a variety of interactive and educational activities related to our oceans and fisheries. In 2017, this event hosted 26 exhibitors with an attendance of over 1500 people of all ages. It is expected these numbers will be repeated in 2018.
World Oceans Day Lecture
Location: St. John’s, NL
Date: June 8, 2018
Description: As part of the Public Lecture Series by the Johnson Geo Centre, Fisheries and Oceans Canada has partnered with World Wildlife Fund Canada and the Johnson Geo Centre to provide a free evening of talks with an oceans focus. The lecture series is a platform to bring together scientists, researchers and the general public – effecting a sharing of knowledge that can broaden each individual’s outlook on our marine world.
World Ocean Day Poster and Essay for Schools
Location: Twillingate, NL
Date: Week of June 4-8, 2017
Description: Fisheries and Oceans Canada will host a Poster Contest with Primary/Elementary Schools with Oceans Day related prizes and an essay Contest with Junior/Senior High Schools with the prize being a Fishery Officer for the day.
Community Beach Cleanup
Location: Twillingate, NL

Description: Open to the public, a community beach cleanup will take place in the area of Twillingate.
