Results of Mail-in Ballot for LFA 11E (3Ps)

The ballots for Lobster Fishing Area (LFA) 11E were counted at the FFAW office in St. John’s this morning, March 27, 2025.

Area 11 Inshore Council Members Alfred Fitzpatrick and Brett Cox were present for the opening and counting of ballots, along with FFAW Administrative Staff Members Jessica Johnson and Aaryn Lambert, and 3Ps Member Representative Jamie Baker.

The results were as follows:

TOTAL VOTES: 189 votes (77.4 per cent turn out overall)

SPOILED BALLOTS: 1 (one)

QUESTION 1 – SEASON OPENING/CLOSING IN 11E (note: dates approximate)

  1. Earlier Season (April 12-June 15) – 75 votes
  2. Leave the season as is (April 19-June 22)  – 114 votes

As always, fleet reps and FFAW will remain in contact with DFO leading up to the opening of the season regarding weather, setting conditions etc.

Dr. Erin Carruthers

Dr. Erin Carruthers is the Science Director and Senior Fisheries Scientist with the Fish, Food and Allied Workers Union (FFAW-Unifor), which is the labour union that represents the owner-operator fleet in Newfoundland and Labrador. The FFAW is committed to research and management that supports healthy oceans, fisheries, and coastal communities. Dr. Carruthers received her Ph. D. in Biology from Memorial University in 2011 followed by a postdoctoral fellowship with the Centre for Fisheries Ecosystems Research. Before coming to Newfoundland, Erin worked as a Research Biologist with Fisheries and Oceans Canada at the St. Andrews Biological Station. Her current research program is co-constructed with fish harvesters and includes research on coastal fishing communities, collaborative longline and trap surveys, and best practices for the avoidance, handling and release of unwanted catch.
