2J3KL Stewardship Cod Fishery – Reopening in NAFO Divisions 3KL for Fall and Reminder of 3KL Catch and Gear Limits

 

DFO reminds harvesters that the Stewardship Cod fishery in NAFO Divisions 3KL will reopen to harvesters who selected the regular season at 0600 hours on Sunday, September 10, 2023. This reopening applies to vessel classes A283 and A295.

 

DFO also reminds harvesters that the Stewardship Cod fishery in NAFO Divisions 3KL will open to harvesters who selected the fall only fishery option at 0600 hours on Sunday, September 10, 2023. This opening applies to vessel class A296.

 

License conditions for the fall period commencing September 10 will be available soon (for both the regular season and fall only fishery option) via the National Online Licensing System.

 

As per the Conservation Harvesting Plan, the base authorized bi-weekly limits for the fall period commencing September 10 are:

 

3KL: Regular Season fishers = 8,500 lbs. base bi-weekly

 

3KL: Fall Only Option = 17,000 lbs. base bi-weekly

 

To ensure that the total harvest remains within the maximum authorized harvest, the Department will continue to monitor this fishery closely. There is approximately 2,600t remaining in 3KL. Any changes or adjustments that may need to be made will be communicated in advance to harvesters via a Notice to Fishers.

 

Harvesters are reminded that they are to ensure that catch limits are not exceeded by setting only the amount of fishing gear that is necessary.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Region gives notice that Variation Order 2023-241 has been revoked and Variation Order 2023-248 comes into effect on September 10, 2023.
