NL SEAL SIGHTINGS LOGBOOK PROGRAM - CALL FOR PARTICPANTS

May 22, 2024

In an effort to better understand seal distributions in NL, we are asking harvesters to complete a daily log documenting seal sightings during fishing activities. We are seeking participants from all fisheries, and from NAFO divisions 2J3KLNO4R and subdivisions 3Pn and 3Ps. Harvesters will be provided an identification guide and be asked to identify seals to species, enter GPS coordinates, estimate number of seals sighted, record pup sightings, describe the physical characteristics of seals observed, and record seal activity/behavior. There will be up to $400 in compensation for completed logbooks ($350), with an added $50 for submitting one or more photos. Harvesters are expected to attend 1 of 3 online (evening) seal identification training sessions with DFO. Applications can be found below. Deadline is May 29th, 2024. For any questions, please contact Ian Ivany at 576-7276 or iivany@ffaw.ca
