Minimum Price for Snow Crab Increases Less Than 2 Weeks After Season Opening

June 2, 2023

Thirteen days after the Newfoundland and Labrador snow crab fishery opened, the minimum price is increasing by an additional five cents per pound, for a minimum price of 2.25 per pound, as a result of Urner Barry market increases that automatically trigger an increase paid to harvesters.

The formula-like increase is per the agreement negotiated following the seven-week tie up last month, and proof that standing strong and fighting back makes a difference.

Discussions have been ongoing this week on finding a solution to trip limits and tolerance to ensure all harvesters have a fair chance to partake in the snow crab fishery this season. These discussions will be ongoing today and over the weekend, and we hope to provide an update to members by Monday. As previously stated, anyone deducted any tolerance should contact their staff representative to file a formal grievance.
