CALLING ALL COLLECTORS!

2021 is the 50th Anniversary of the Fish, Food and Allied Workers Union. In advance of the 13th Constitutional Convention taking place next month, we’re calling on members to submit old union memorabilia.

There will be THREE prizes available:

1st Prize: $150 Mercer’s Marine Gift Card
2nd Prize: $100 Mercer’s Marine Gift Card
3rd Prize: $50 Mercer’s Marine Gift Card

What type of things are we looking for?

  1. Old photos (Particularly photos from early days of organizing – 1970s and 1980s, but any pre-2000 photos are welcome)
  2. Old Union Forum Magazines from the 1970’s
  3. Any old union swag (SPECIAL PRIZE to anyone who can provide a photo or original “IT STARTED IN BURGEO” Green Bumper Sticker

How to submit:

Take a photo of your submission using a cell phone or feel free to scan to a computer if you have a scanner. Email or text your photos to 709-743-4445 or cglode@ffaw.ca.

Dr. Erin Carruthers

Dr. Erin Carruthers is the Science Director and Senior Fisheries Scientist with the Fish, Food and Allied Workers Union (FFAW-Unifor), which is the labour union that represents the owner-operator fleet in Newfoundland and Labrador. The FFAW is committed to research and management that supports healthy oceans, fisheries, and coastal communities. Dr. Carruthers received her Ph. D. in Biology from Memorial University in 2011 followed by a postdoctoral fellowship with the Centre for Fisheries Ecosystems Research. Before coming to Newfoundland, Erin worked as a Research Biologist with Fisheries and Oceans Canada at the St. Andrews Biological Station. Her current research program is co-constructed with fish harvesters and includes research on coastal fishing communities, collaborative longline and trap surveys, and best practices for the avoidance, handling and release of unwanted catch.
