REMINDER – LOBSTER QUALITY & HANDLING WORKSHOP IN GANDER & SPRINGDALE

The FFAW is offering a free Lobster Quality & Handling Workshop on January 15th at the following locations:

1. Quality Hotel in Gander @ 8:30 AM

2. Manual Hall in Springdal @ 2:00 PM

The trainer for the workshop will be Melanie Griffin, a Marine Biologist from the PEI Fishermen’s Association. Kim Rose, Area 3K Member Representative will also be in attendance. Topics that will be discussed include lobster biology and anatomy, proper handling techniques to reduce stress/mortality, and how to determine the quality of your lobster. Sessions will be 2-3 hours and will include a door price. Attendance will be taken, and one (1) land based education credit will be awarded.

Dr. Erin Carruthers

Dr. Erin Carruthers is the Science Director and Senior Fisheries Scientist with the Fish, Food and Allied Workers Union (FFAW-Unifor), which is the labour union that represents the owner-operator fleet in Newfoundland and Labrador. The FFAW is committed to research and management that supports healthy oceans, fisheries, and coastal communities. Dr. Carruthers received her Ph. D. in Biology from Memorial University in 2011 followed by a postdoctoral fellowship with the Centre for Fisheries Ecosystems Research. Before coming to Newfoundland, Erin worked as a Research Biologist with Fisheries and Oceans Canada at the St. Andrews Biological Station. Her current research program is co-constructed with fish harvesters and includes research on coastal fishing communities, collaborative longline and trap surveys, and best practices for the avoidance, handling and release of unwanted catch.
