Lost Gear Retrieval Applications – 3K

August 18, 2021 – Applications for the Lost Gear Retrieval Project in area 3k are now available for download HERE. Deadline for applications is FRIDAY, AUGUST 27TH at 2:00pm.

Eligibility Requirements Include:

– Level II Fish Harvester
– Minimum vessel size 34’11” and must be equipped with winch/hauler
– Head of an enterprise licensed to fish commercially in 3K
– Member in good standing with the FFAW
– Must be registered with the Professional Fish Harvesters Certification Board
– Eligible for an experimental license issued by Department of Fisheries and Oceans
– The harvester will aid in locating and retrieving abandoned, lost or otherwise discarded
fishing gear
– 2-3 key areas will be targeted for retrieval in 3K

Dr. Erin Carruthers

Dr. Erin Carruthers is the Science Director and Senior Fisheries Scientist with the Fish, Food and Allied Workers Union (FFAW-Unifor), which is the labour union that represents the owner-operator fleet in Newfoundland and Labrador. The FFAW is committed to research and management that supports healthy oceans, fisheries, and coastal communities. Dr. Carruthers received her Ph. D. in Biology from Memorial University in 2011 followed by a postdoctoral fellowship with the Centre for Fisheries Ecosystems Research. Before coming to Newfoundland, Erin worked as a Research Biologist with Fisheries and Oceans Canada at the St. Andrews Biological Station. Her current research program is co-constructed with fish harvesters and includes research on coastal fishing communities, collaborative longline and trap surveys, and best practices for the avoidance, handling and release of unwanted catch.
