FFAW-Unifor Welcomes Jamie Baker as Newly Elected Secretary-Treasurer

FFAW-Unifor is pleased to announce the appointment of Jamie Baker as its new Secretary-Treasurer following a nomination period open to all members in good standing from September 11 – September 26, 2025 . As the sole nominee and approved candidate, the Election Committee has declared Jamie the winner by acclamation.

Jamie has served as a Member Representative for 3Ps  after some time away from the Union since October 2024. Early on, he built a distinguished career in journalism, holding senior positions in publications such as The Telegram, The Navigator, and CBC’s The Fisheries Broadcast.

Beyond his work in journalism, Jamie has held several leadership roles, including Director of Communications for FFAW-Unifor, Executive Director of the Fur Institute of Canada in Ottawa, and Executive Director of the Newfoundland and Labrador Aquaculture Industry Association (NAIA).

FFAW-Unifor extends its sincere congratulations to Jamie on his new role. He will be officially inaugurated at the next meeting of the FFAW-Unifor Executive Board.

Dr. Erin Carruthers

Dr. Erin Carruthers is the Science Director and Senior Fisheries Scientist with the Fish, Food and Allied Workers Union (FFAW-Unifor), which is the labour union that represents the owner-operator fleet in Newfoundland and Labrador. The FFAW is committed to research and management that supports healthy oceans, fisheries, and coastal communities. Dr. Carruthers received her Ph. D. in Biology from Memorial University in 2011 followed by a postdoctoral fellowship with the Centre for Fisheries Ecosystems Research. Before coming to Newfoundland, Erin worked as a Research Biologist with Fisheries and Oceans Canada at the St. Andrews Biological Station. Her current research program is co-constructed with fish harvesters and includes research on coastal fishing communities, collaborative longline and trap surveys, and best practices for the avoidance, handling and release of unwanted catch.
