Constitutional Changes Passed for Midterm Vacancies

August 21, 2025

Today, the FFAW-Unifor Executive Board passed an interim amendment to the union’s Constitution in favour of adopting changes to the election process for vacancies in the offices of the President and Secretary-Treasurer.

In summary, these changes state that any vacancy in the office of the President or Secretary-Treasurer with more than 18 months remaining in the term will be put to a secret ballot vote of the entire membership. Vacancies with less than 18 months remaining in the term will follow the established process of a joint council vote.

“The Executive Board determined that, given the substantial time remaining in the current term, the election to fill the Secretary-Treasurer position should be decided by the entire membership, not solely the two sector councils. To proceed, constitutional amendments were required and unanimously approved by the Board, ensuring this change serves the best interests of all members,” explains FFAW-Unifor President Dwan Street. “This change ensures that when a top official of our union vacates their position with more than half the term remaining, all members of the union will have the opportunity to vote.”

These changes will remain in effect for the remainder of this term and will be put to the floor of the next Convention for permanent ratification.

The Executive Board has hereby notified the Elections Committee to hold an election for the Secretary-Treasurer vacancy per these terms. The Notice of Election and Notice of Nominations will follow from the Elections Committee in the coming days. These notices will be posted on our website, Facebook, and emailed to members.

An electronic vote of the entire membership will proceed if more than one eligible nomination is received.
