Applications Open for Placentia Bay Ocean Debris Survey

Applications are now being accepted for participation in the Placentia Bay Ocean Debris Survey with Memorial University – pending project approval. Harvesters must fish from one of the following locations:
Arnolds Cove/Long Island
Harvester projected to be needed for 9 days between Start-up and September.
St. Bride’s
Harvester projected to be needed for 6 days between Start-up and September.
Burin Region (Red Harbour to Burin)
Harvester projected to be needed for 1 day in May and 1 day in September.
St. Croix (Long Harbour Area)
Harvester projected to be needed for 2 days soon after Start up and 2 days in July. Long Harbour Harvesters must be able to land technicians on the beach.
To obtain an application please call the St. John’s office at 576-7276. Application deadline is Monday April 29th at 4:30 pm. Vessels must be 25’ or greater – in the event that beach work must be completed an auxiliary vessel may be required. Only those successful in the draw process will be contacted.

Dr. Erin Carruthers

Dr. Erin Carruthers is the Science Director and Senior Fisheries Scientist with the Fish, Food and Allied Workers Union (FFAW-Unifor), which is the labour union that represents the owner-operator fleet in Newfoundland and Labrador. The FFAW is committed to research and management that supports healthy oceans, fisheries, and coastal communities. Dr. Carruthers received her Ph. D. in Biology from Memorial University in 2011 followed by a postdoctoral fellowship with the Centre for Fisheries Ecosystems Research. Before coming to Newfoundland, Erin worked as a Research Biologist with Fisheries and Oceans Canada at the St. Andrews Biological Station. Her current research program is co-constructed with fish harvesters and includes research on coastal fishing communities, collaborative longline and trap surveys, and best practices for the avoidance, handling and release of unwanted catch.
