2021 Green Crab Applications - Fortune Bay

July 20, 2021 – Applications are now being accepted for green crab harvesting under the Provincial Government’s and Natural Resources Canada’s ongoing project in Fortune Bay. Harvesters eligible to apply must fish from one of the following locations:

1. Harbour Breton
2. Garnish/Frenchman’s Cove
3. Belleoram
4. Connaigre Bay
5. Rencontre East
6. Little Harbour East/Harbour Mille
7. Grand LaPierre/English Harbour East
8. Seal Cove
9. Mose Ambrose/Wreck Cove
10. English Harbour West
11. Little Bay East/Bay L’Argent
12. Hermitage
13. St. Bernard’s/Jacques Fontaine
14. Terrenceville
15. Grand Bank – Fortune
16. McCallum

*Harvesters may apply for multiple locations. However, they will only be awarded one.

This project will runs from August until October 2021.

Dr. Erin Carruthers

Dr. Erin Carruthers is the Science Director and Senior Fisheries Scientist with the Fish, Food and Allied Workers Union (FFAW-Unifor), which is the labour union that represents the owner-operator fleet in Newfoundland and Labrador. The FFAW is committed to research and management that supports healthy oceans, fisheries, and coastal communities. Dr. Carruthers received her Ph. D. in Biology from Memorial University in 2011 followed by a postdoctoral fellowship with the Centre for Fisheries Ecosystems Research. Before coming to Newfoundland, Erin worked as a Research Biologist with Fisheries and Oceans Canada at the St. Andrews Biological Station. Her current research program is co-constructed with fish harvesters and includes research on coastal fishing communities, collaborative longline and trap surveys, and best practices for the avoidance, handling and release of unwanted catch.
