FFAW-Unifor Fisheries Scientist Erin Carruthers participated in the Framework Review Meeting for Atlantic Mackerel held in Mont-Joli, Quebec from January 18 to 20. The purpose of meeting was to review the assessment model, basically evaluating the methods to be used in the assessment this coming March. Although the meeting was focused on reviewing methods, there was considerable discussion on information available from the fisheries, particularly bait fisheries and the American winter fishery as mackerel is considered a transboundary stock.

The mackerel assessment meeting, scheduled for March 8 to 9 in Mont-Joli, promises to be an interesting meeting. FFAW-Unifor will be sending Newfoundland Mackerel harvester representatives, as well as FFAW-Unifor staff to that important meeting.
