Reminder: 2019 Expression of Interest Greenland Halibut (Turbot) for 2+3K and 3LMNO

DFO wishes to remind harvesters who want to participate in the 2019 <65′ fixed gear fishery for Greenland Halibut (turbot) in divisions 2+3K or division 3LMNO, that they must submit an expression of interest application to Fisheries and Oceans by close of business, Friday, May 24, 2019. Applications are available by contacting Fisheries and Oceans at (709) 292-5095.

For the 2019 fishing season, permits will be used to manage both the 2+3K and 3LMNO Greenland Halibut (turbot) fishery. Once all expression of interests have been received, the permit trip limits for fisheries in 2+3K and 3LMNO will be set.

Fish harvesters are required to email or fax the expression of interest application to the Resource Manager at kelly.firmage-o’brien@dfo-mpo.gc.caor fax number 709-772-5634. A valid e-mail address must be included in the application as all future correspondence will be conducted by email. Incomplete or late applications will not be accepted.

Dr. Erin Carruthers

Dr. Erin Carruthers is the Science Director and Senior Fisheries Scientist with the Fish, Food and Allied Workers Union (FFAW-Unifor), which is the labour union that represents the owner-operator fleet in Newfoundland and Labrador. The FFAW is committed to research and management that supports healthy oceans, fisheries, and coastal communities. Dr. Carruthers received her Ph. D. in Biology from Memorial University in 2011 followed by a postdoctoral fellowship with the Centre for Fisheries Ecosystems Research. Before coming to Newfoundland, Erin worked as a Research Biologist with Fisheries and Oceans Canada at the St. Andrews Biological Station. Her current research program is co-constructed with fish harvesters and includes research on coastal fishing communities, collaborative longline and trap surveys, and best practices for the avoidance, handling and release of unwanted catch.
