ONSHORE/LAND-BASED WIND PROJECT UPDATE: ABO ENERGY

October 1, 2024

On Wednesday, September 25th, Industry Relations Representative Katie Power and FFAW Inshore Council members Jamie Barnett and Loretta Ward met with ABO Energy.

This introductory meeting helped FFAW get an overview of their proposed land-based wind project and ensured FFAW highlighted potential fisheries related concerns adjacent to the project area (map attached). Potentially affected communities include those in between Clarenville and Long Harbour. The project is in early, environmental and field studies phases. It has not yet been determined which port will be developed as part of energy export.

This is a land-based wind project ONLY. ABO has assured FFAW their business model is strictly for land-based operations; ABO has no mandate for nearshore or offshore wind.

FFAW members raised concerns about timely communication of information and transparent updates to harvesters in the area, potential ammonia refuse run off into bays, increased marine traffic, and decommissioning plans. Once the project description has been completed, the project footprint and marine impacts will be more clear.

Marine and fisheries related impacts from land-based wind projects are generally considered minimal given project scopes are land-based. ABO is highly conscious of the need to keep area residents informed.

Public engagement meetings are being planned. FFAW will share details of these meetings as soon as they are available for members interested in attending.
