NORTH ATLANTIC ONSHORE WIND HYDROGEN PROJECT INFORMATION

North Atlantic is proposing to develop a renewable energy project in the Placentia Bay and Trinity Bay regions. The Project will include the installation of an onshore wind farm to power the production of green hydrogen for export to global markets.

North Atlantic was awarded 10,300 hectares (Ha) in total of Crown Lands around the Avalon Isthmus. The initial North Atlantic Wind to Hydrogen Project is proposed to develop a wind farm on 4,600 hectares in the Sunnyside area, with the remaining Crown Land reserved for future projects, and a hydrogen plant and hydrogenation plant in Come by Chance, at the existing North Atlantic Logistics terminal.

The Trinity Bay side (3L) is the site for the proposed land-based wind farm and the placetnia Bay side (3Ps) is the site for the hydrogen-ammonia plant at the existing terminal. See map.

FFAW will be arranging an intoductory meeting with North Atlantic in the new year. In the meantime, harvesters in the area can stop in to the pop-up office open at the Bull Arm Information Centre on the highway between Arnold’s Cove and Sunnyside with their own questions or concerns:

• Tuesday, December 17, 1 PM – 5 PM
• Wednesday, December 18, 1PM – 5 PM and 7 PM – 9 PM
• Thursday, December 19, 9 AM -12 noon

Fisheries related impacts from land-based wind projects are generally considered minimal given scopes are land-based. However, FFAW continues to amplify concerns surrounding impacts to adjacent fisheries, risks of ammonia spills and refuse runoff into bays, increased vessel traffic, decommissioning plans, and the need to effectively inform and engage harvesters in affected communities. Land-based, provincial wind energy projects do not include expansion into the offshore marine environment.
