Capelin Prices 2016
Record High Prices for Capelin in 2016
On June 20, 2016, the Standing Fish Price Setting Panel released its decision for capelin prices in 2016 and it selected the submission of the FFAW. The international market for capelin is very strong and export prices have increased for the psat several years. In the past the harvester share lagged behind the export value. This year we managed to change that fact.
The “A” price for capelin in 22 cents a pound while the “B” price is 14 cents. This is an 47% increase in the 2015 “A” price and a 40% increase in the “B” price. Since 2012, the price for capelin to harvesters has increased by 55%.
The particulars of this year’s price schedule are below.
There is a two-tiered minimum price system for the 2016 capelin fishery:
Price “A” – 22 cents per pound
Specs for “A” Price
- 55 count per kilo and under
- Maximum 10% feed content
- Minimum 40% usable females, which are classified as 5.25 inches or higher.
- All female capelin less than 5.25 inches will be classed as males only for the purpose of determining the percentage of usable females for price “A” purposes
Price “B” – 14 cents per pound
Specs for “B” Price
- 55 count per kilo and under
- Maximum 10% feed content
- Minimum 40% females, regardless of size. All female capelin, including broken, damaged, over-matured, or less than 5.25 inches are counted to assess whether the 40% threshold for Price “B” is met.
If the capelin exceeds 55 count per kilo or 10% feed content or is below 40% female, the price shall be determined between the individual harvester and processer.
