BALLOT RESULTS: LFA 4A OPENING DATE

The ballots on opening date for Lobster Fishing Area (LFA) 4A were counted at the FFAW office in St. John’s on May 2, 2025. 

Present for the counting of ballots were FFAW Inshore Director Sherry Glynn, 3K Member Representative Julian Ryan, and Ian Ivany 3L Member Representative. Attending online were LFA 4A Committee Members Byron Oxford, Jeff Chippett, Nancy Bowers, and Scott Rowsell.

Results: 

Total ballots: 122 Votes

Question: Season Opening/Closing Date. 

Earlier Season (May 10 -July 5): 38 votes

Status Quo (May 17 to July 12): 84 votes

Based on the ballot results, the recommended season dates will remain status quo, May 17 to July 12.

Dr. Erin Carruthers

Dr. Erin Carruthers is the Science Director and Senior Fisheries Scientist with the Fish, Food and Allied Workers Union (FFAW-Unifor), which is the labour union that represents the owner-operator fleet in Newfoundland and Labrador. The FFAW is committed to research and management that supports healthy oceans, fisheries, and coastal communities. Dr. Carruthers received her Ph. D. in Biology from Memorial University in 2011 followed by a postdoctoral fellowship with the Centre for Fisheries Ecosystems Research. Before coming to Newfoundland, Erin worked as a Research Biologist with Fisheries and Oceans Canada at the St. Andrews Biological Station. Her current research program is co-constructed with fish harvesters and includes research on coastal fishing communities, collaborative longline and trap surveys, and best practices for the avoidance, handling and release of unwanted catch.
