LOBSTER UPDATE APRIL 29, 2023

April 29, 2023

Leaders in the lobster fishery from throughout the province met virtually tonight for nearly three hours to discuss a counterproposal received from ASP. Under the proposal, ASP propositioned to implement changes they have put forward in the past, including removal of the Thursday Urner Barry Index before Mother’s Day and reductions at higher price points.

There was no consensus on the proposal.

A number of representatives requested for additional time to consult with harvesters in their areas. FFAW is also requesting additional information from ASP, which is expected tomorrow.

The Union will accept as much feedback from members as possible, and the Negotiating Committee intends to finalize the position in the coming days. If you agree or disagree with this proposal and wish to make your opinion known, you can have your say via email to communications@ffaw.ca with subject LOBSTER, or contact your local Committee rep, or Staff Representative.

Harvesters remain concerned that this is a concerted effort from processing companies to exert control over the inshore fishing industry, in order to systematically erode harvesters’ shares in the market.

Members continually note the stark absence of the provincial government from this crisis. They demand our province acknowledge the crisis and step in to protect the thousands of jobs that rely on this industry.

This group will meet again early next week, and an update will be provided following.
