Seasonal workers in Newfoundland and Labrador need stability from one season to the next.

A changing EI divisor can mean hundreds of dollars less each month and fewer weeks of benefits for workers who cannot simply extend their season or find additional work.

The House of Commons may be on recess, but MPs are still working — and they need to hear from us.

The federal government must take action now by keeping the divisor at 14 for all seasonal workers.

Subject: Fix EI for Seasonal Workers

I am writing to ask you to take action on the EI issues affecting seasonal workers in Newfoundland and Labrador.

A changing EI divisor creates serious uncertainty for seasonal workers. Our working seasons are fixed, and we cannot simply extend our season or find additional hours when the divisor increases.

That can mean up to $400 less per month for one seasonal worker, or $800 per month in a household with two seasonal workers. Workers could also lose up to six weeks of EI benefits, potentially creating a nearly two-month gap in income before the next working season begins.

Seasonal workers pay into EI and rely on it to bridge the gap between fixed working seasons. We need a system that provides stability from one year to the next.

The additional five weeks of EI are important, but they are not enough if workers still face qualification barriers or reduced weekly benefits.

I am asking the federal government to stop the instability and uncertainty by calculating all seasonal worker EI benefits at Divisor 14.

Please make this issue a priority and help ensure seasonal workers have stable, predictable EI benefits from one season to the next.
