WE'RE HIRING: ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT

FFAW-Unifor is seeking an Administrative Assistant to join our team. This position will report to the Office Manager and will be able to work in a fast paced, deadline driven environment. The successful candidate will be tasked with a wide variety of administrative and accounting responsibilities.

Responsibilities:
– Answer phones, take messages and direct office visitors
– Coordinate appointments, meetings, agendas, maintain calendars and record and distribute meeting minutes
– Maintain confidential records and ensure information is handled appropriately
– Assist with data entry, accounts receivable and accounts payable
– Support a broad range of administrative activities as required

Qualifications:
– 1-3 years’ experience or equivalent in an administrative level capacity
– Advanced-level Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint proficiency
– Ability to exercise sound judgment, prioritization and maintain confidentiality
– Exceptional organizational skills
– The ability to multi-task and juggle multiple priorities
– Excellent verbal and written communication skills
– Background in accounting and familiarity with accounting software would be an asset
– Legally permitted to work in Canada

Dr. Erin Carruthers

Dr. Erin Carruthers is the Science Director and Senior Fisheries Scientist with the Fish, Food and Allied Workers Union (FFAW-Unifor), which is the labour union that represents the owner-operator fleet in Newfoundland and Labrador. The FFAW is committed to research and management that supports healthy oceans, fisheries, and coastal communities. Dr. Carruthers received her Ph. D. in Biology from Memorial University in 2011 followed by a postdoctoral fellowship with the Centre for Fisheries Ecosystems Research. Before coming to Newfoundland, Erin worked as a Research Biologist with Fisheries and Oceans Canada at the St. Andrews Biological Station. Her current research program is co-constructed with fish harvesters and includes research on coastal fishing communities, collaborative longline and trap surveys, and best practices for the avoidance, handling and release of unwanted catch.
