8A Snow Crab

During meetings conducted by Department of Fisheries and Oceans and after hearing from harvesters in the area, the number of pots allowed in the 8A single enterprise, buddy ups and combined enterprises in the crab fishery was raised for consideration. After further discussions, it was decided this topic should be put to a vote for all licensed harvesters in the Southern Shore (Inshore 8A) area.

At present, Area 8A harvesters are allowed a maximum of 200 pots on a single license, and 300 in a buddy up, or a combined enterprise. This vote is to determine if harvesters wish to have a 50-pot increase in single enterprise, and 100-pot increase in a buddy up arrangement or combined enterprises (a maximum of 250 pots on a single license, with a maximum of 400 pots in a buddy up or combined enterprise).

If approved by the majority of voters in CMA 8A, the recommendation will be submitted to DFO. If it is NOT approved by the majority of license holders, the recommendation will not move forward.

This vote does not guarantee any recommendations will be accepted, as any changes to pot numbers would be subject to DFO approval.

If you wish to discuss in further detail, feel free to reach out to any of the committee members:
