3Ps Supplementary Snow Crab
During recent meetings with your 3Ps Member Representative – and following feedback from harvesters in the area – the option of introducing a buddy-up in the 3Ps supplementary crab fleet was raised for consideration.
The following buddy-up rules that apply to all species will be in place for the 3Ps supplementary crab fleet:
- A buddy-up is an arrangement between two license holders.
- Only one buddy-up is allowed per season.
- A buddy-up must be in place before fishing starts.
- There are no designations in a buddy-up.
- A buddy-up can be canceled at any time.
The following will apply to 3Ps supplementary crab:
- Both license holders in the buddy-up must be aboard the vessel whenever crab is being fished. To be clear, in a buddy-up arrangement, both buddies must be on-board during all crab fishing activity, including setting and hauling pots; and
- Currently, the 3Ps supplementary crab fleet is permitted a maximum of 400 pots on a single licence and600 pots on a combined enterprise. If buddy-up is recommended, a single license will be permitted 400 pots and buddy-up/combined enterprises will be permitted 600 pots.
If a majority of the 3Ps supplementary crab fleet votes in favour of buddy-up, the recommendation will be submitted to DFO. If the majority does not vote in favour, the recommendation will not go forward to the department.
This vote does not guarantee any recommendations will be accepted, as the department makes the final decision on whether to implement a policy change.
