The COVID-19 pandemic has created significant anxiety and uncertainty within Newfoundland and Labrador’s fishing industry. Both fish harvesters and processing plant workers have prioritized safety by recommending delays in fisheries this season in order to prevent the spread of the virus.

We are calling on our provincial government to support workers in the fishing industry by prohibiting processing companies from trucking in fish from other provinces for processing and to prohibit fishing vessels from Quebec, Nova Scotia and Saint-Pierre and Miquelon to land at our ports and have their catch processed in facilities in our province while our province’s own industry has chosen to put safety first by delaying our fisheries.

Permitting the processing of snow crab from outside the province to take place at this point in time will impact the price fish harvesters in this province get for their catch and will put pressure on fish harvesters and plant workers to go back to work under circumstances where they do not feel safe and could potentially put our own industry at risk by exposing our workers to unsafe conditions.

Safeguard the health and incomes of our province’s fish harvesters, plant workers, their families and coastal communities by prohibiting fish processing companies from bringing in product from outside the province for processing before the fishery begins in Newfoundland and Labrador.
