Retirement of Secretary-Treasurer David Decker

September 24, 2020

Dear Members,

I am writing you today on behalf of FFAW’s Executive Board to share the news that we have received a notice of retirement from our Secretary-Treasurer, David Decker.

In one form or another, David Decker has spent his entire life working in and around the fishing industry in Newfoundland and Labrador.

He was born into a fishing family in Ship Cove on the tip of the Northern Peninsula. Like so many young people in rural communities, David grew up fishing with his father, and later took over the family enterprise. In 1990, David took his first job with FFAW when he was hired to deliver health and safety courses for the Union. A short time later, in 1991, he joined the staff at the Union’s Corner Brook office. He carried on in that role until 2003, when he was hired as the Union’s Inshore Director, working on behalf of harvesters across the province. Later that same year, David was elected to the position of Secretary-Treasurer.

David’s passion and commitment to the province’s fishery and to the working people of Newfoundland and Labrador is the driving force behind a career that has left an indelible mark on our Union and on the province. His vision, strategic thinking and determination to uplift the voices of FFAW members in all places where decisions are made has left our Union well-positioned to take on any challenges we face now and in the future.

On behalf of the Executive Board, I’d like to extend our Union’s deepest thanks and appreciation to David for more than 30 years of service to the members of FFAW.

In accordance with Article VII of FFAW’s Constitution, the Executive Board has notified the Election Committee of the vacancy. This email serves as notification of the election.

The Nomination Period for the position of Secretary-Treasurer will open on October 9. Nominations close on October 22. Further communications will be sent to members with details of the Nomination requirements.

A joint council meeting will be held on October 28 to conduct the election.

If you have any questions about the election process, please contact the Election Committee at elections@ffaw.ca or call the union office at 709-576-7276.

Yours truly,
