Marine Institute graduate student, Rachel Marshall, is looking to interview fish harvesters about Atlantic halibut behavior and movement in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Knowledge gained from these interviews will be compared with data from electronic tags to investigate the seasonal distribution of Atlantic halibut in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and inform the design of the longline survey.
Participating harvesters will take part in semi-structured interviews in which they will be asked to describe their experiences as a fish harvester targeting groundfish in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, with special attention paid to their experience with Atlantic halibut. Participation will require no more than two hours. Interviews will be held in the following locations from January 24 to February 2, 2019: Port aux Basques, Stephenville, Rocky Harbour, Cow Head, Port Saunders, and Plum Point.
Fish harvesters who are actively fishing for groundfish in NAFO divisions 3Pn and 4R, and who have been doing so for at least five years, who are interested in participating in this study, please contact Rachel Marshall to arrange a meeting time (email: Rachel.Marshall@mi.mun.ca; phone: 709-769-0968).
