Important Info for Harvesters Fishing in Placentia Bay

February 5, 2020

Last week, FFAW-Unifor held a joint meeting with representatives of Newfoundland Transshipment Ltd. and harvesters who fish in the Whiffen Head terminal area.  The meeting was convened in response to the increased incidence of near-misses, leading us to stress the importance of harvesters being vigilant to ensure the safest navigation possible.

At the meeting, concerns were raised regarding safety procedures as well as risks of gear loss for harvesters who are not taking heed of tanker traffic.

Harvesters are justifiably frustrated with the increased industrial traffic in Placentia Bay in recent years due to expanded operations at the Come by Chance refinery. However, harvesters fishing in this area are reminded to adhere to traffic rules in the traffic corridor.

Fish harvesters are encouraged to monitor VHF radio at all times, and to regularly check the Atlantic Pilotage Authority website, under Current Assignments, for up-to-date tanker traffic schedules.  https://www.atlanticpilotage.com/operations/current-assignments/
