FFAW Submits Request for EI Extension for Harvesters Affected by Severe ice
Today, FFAW-Unifor submitted a formal request for an extension to employment benefits for fish harvesters affected by heavy ice.
Inshore harvesters and plant workers are already facing an uncertain economic future due to cuts in shrimp and crab quotas. In the areas impacted by delayed openings, families need some means to limit any further financial strain this season.
Delays as a result of ice conditions are a yearly occurrence for many employed in the fishery. A permanent solution with no waiting period is needed for all workersaffected by these delays.
Hundreds of families are currently impacted and as ice conditions persist this number is expected to rise. FFAW requested the Minister’s prompt attention to this matter and await a response soon. Read the full letter here.
