DFO INSHORE FISHERY OUTREACH MEETINGS (NAFO Division 3KL)

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans will host a number of meetings along the Northeast and East Coast of the island portion of the Province (NAFO Division 3KL) in early 2018. The intent of these meetings is to provide inshore harvesters and other interested stakeholders an opportunity to discuss matters of concern in current inshore fisheries. Our primary goal will be to hear harvesters’ concerns with a view to working with them to develop feasible solutions. These meetings will be held in the following locations:

NAFO Division 3K

Baie Verte, Baie Vista Inn, Tuesday January 16, 2018 from 6 – 8 P.M.

Twillingate, Lion’s Club, Wednesday January 17, 2018 from 6-8 P.M.

Fogo Island, Anglican Church Hall, Thursday January 18, 2018 from 10 – 12 P.M.

NAFO Division 3L

Hare Bay, Hare Bay Fire Hall,  Friday January 19, 2018 from 2-4 P.M.

Bonavista, Lion’s Club, Monday January 22, 2018 from 2-4 P.M.

Shearstown, Lion’s Club, Wednesday January 24, 2018 from 10-12 A.M.

Riverhead, Royal Canadian Legion, Wednesday January 24 2018 from 6-8 P.M.

Ferryland, Southern Shore Folk Arts Centre, Thursday January 25, 2018 from 10-12 A.M.

Dr. Erin Carruthers

Dr. Erin Carruthers is the Science Director and Senior Fisheries Scientist with the Fish, Food and Allied Workers Union (FFAW-Unifor), which is the labour union that represents the owner-operator fleet in Newfoundland and Labrador. The FFAW is committed to research and management that supports healthy oceans, fisheries, and coastal communities. Dr. Carruthers received her Ph. D. in Biology from Memorial University in 2011 followed by a postdoctoral fellowship with the Centre for Fisheries Ecosystems Research. Before coming to Newfoundland, Erin worked as a Research Biologist with Fisheries and Oceans Canada at the St. Andrews Biological Station. Her current research program is co-constructed with fish harvesters and includes research on coastal fishing communities, collaborative longline and trap surveys, and best practices for the avoidance, handling and release of unwanted catch.
