Consultation with FFAW results in DFO announcing full stock assessment for northern cod

Last week, Minister Dominic LeBlanc met with FFAW leadership in Ottawa. One of the many points raised in this meeting included a need for full stock assessment on northern cod, rather than wait for the scheduled assessment in years time. We are pleased to see that DFO has listened to harvesters via this meeting and in consultation with the 2+3KLNO committee, and is taking much needed action to better understand the growth of the northern cod stock. In the coming years, northern cod will be prove to be a vital resource for harvesters and plant workers in Newfoundland and Labrador as we transition to a groundfish focused fishery here in the province.
