Cod Buddy-Up Proposal and Ballot in the Mail

May 16, 2024

For several years, harvesters have been seeking buddy up in the 2J3KL Northern cod fishery. The desire for buddy up is being driven by several factors: safety, economics, availability of crewmembers, and quality of the catch.

The mailout should be arriving in your post box soon and includes the proposed buddy up policy (so you know what you’re voting on) and the ballot. Please complete the ballot and return using the enclosed, prepaid envelope. Ballots must be postmarked by May 31, 2024. The count will be conducted, and results released by June 5, 2024.

This policy was drafted by our Cod Working Group, supported by Inshore Council, and will be proposed to DFO pending the result of this ballot. It is important to note that the department makes the final decision on each aspect of this proposal, including whether to allow buddy up in 2J3KL Northern cod.

If you have any questions about this ballot or the buddy up proposal, please call the Union office at 709-576-7276, or reach our directly to Member Representatives Miranda Butler (mbutler@ffaw.ca), Sherry Glynn (sglynn@ffaw.ca) and Jeff Griffin (jgriffin@ffaw.ca).
