4RST Halibut Receives Modest TAC Increase

Today, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans announced total allowable catch (TAC) for the 4RST Atlantic halibut fishery, announcing a total TAC of 2466, up by almost 14% over last year.
“This is welcomed news for harvesters in Western Newfoundland. The Atlantic halibut stock provides important economic opportunities for harvesters in that region and has been an increasingly valuable species in recent years,” says FFAW-Unifor Secretary Treasurer Jason Spingle.
“We feel the Minister took a balanced approach in this decision, and we will continue our work to ensure the commercial redfish fishery maintains sustainability and minimizes impacts on the halibut resource for those who fish commercially,” Spingle says.
