Total Allowable Catches for the 2022 2J3KL Stewardship Fishery

Total Allowable Catches for the 2022 2J3KL Stewardship Fishery

Yesterday evening, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) released the total allowable catch (TAC) information for the 2J3KL Northern Cod Stewardship Fishery. The TAC for 2022 fishing season is set at 12,999t, which is a rollover from the previous season. DFO has allocated 2,600t of the TAC to be harvested in 2J.

FFAW-Unifor requested a conservative increase to 15,000t based on evidence that the small stewardship fishery is not impacting the stock’s growth. Northern Cod, if managed responsibly and in collaboration with industry, has the potential to provide significant opportunity for a sustainable fishery. Modest increases in the harvest rates can simultaneously build capacity on land without having any significant impact on the growth of the stock.

Season dates and other details will be included in the Conservation and Harvesting Plan expected in the coming weeks.

The TAC for the Gulf Cod fishery has not yet been released.
