Approximately 20 enterprises are blocked inside of Placentia Bay due to a mechanical failure of the Placentia Bay Lift Bridge and FFAW-Unifor is calling on the Provincial Government to find a long-term solution to the recurring problem. The Bridge’s unreliability has continually caused economic hardship to fish harvesters who suffer when the bridge is inoperable.
“This problem with the Placentia Bay Lift Bridge has been ongoing for the last several years, and the provincial government has failed to find a long-term solution instead favouring unreliable, Band-Aid fixes. The result is lost income for our coastal communities when boats are stuck inside the harbour unable to access their fishing grounds,” says FFAW-Unifor Secretary Treasurer Jason Spingle.
Harvesters are continuing to bear the burden of inaction and demand urgent provincial intervention. FFAW will continue to follow up with responsible government departments to get harvesters back on the water as soon as possible.
