EI ADJUSTMENT UPDATE DEC 3, 2023 – JAN 6, 2024

As of December 3rd, Service Canada has posted the unemployment rate for Economic Region 2 (all NL outside of St. John’s metro) as 13.7% (a rise from 12.9%). This adjustment returns the divisor to 14 and the criteria that was in place before the unemployment rate began to drop in August is now restored.
The adjusted criteria is as follows:
Number of Insured Hours Required to Qualify for Regular Benefits: 420
Minimum Number of Weeks Payable for Regular Benefits: 26
Maximum Number of Weeks Payable for Regular Benefits: 45
Minimum Insurable Earnings Required for Fish Harvesters: $2,500
Insurable Earnings Needs to Receive Maximum Fishing EI Benefits: $16,548 (14 x $1,182)
The unemployment rate for Economic Region 1 (St. John’s metro) is now 6.5% (a rise from 5.9%), changing the divisor to 21. The adjusted criteria is as follows:
Number of Insured Hours Required to Qualify for Regular Benefits: 665
Minimum Number of Weeks Payable for Regular Benefits: 15
Maximum Number of Weeks Payable for Regular Benefits: 38
Minimum Insurable Earnings Required for Fish Harvesters: $4,000
Insurable Earnings Needs to Receive Maximum Fishing EI Benefits: $24,843 (21 x $1,183)
